To Breed or Not to Breed

That is the question...

Owning two mares, which are from "good" bloodlines throws a whole new light on the horse ownership game. Both horses have a lot of what is called “cow” blood. Meaning their sires and dam sires were known for doing well in cutting, reining, roping etc. This is a very hot market to get into, as a good working cow horse can bring a LOT of money.

This past week I received our first issue of The Appaloosa Journal. It is full of pages and pages of stallion advertisements, as is typical of any breed journal. For years I've watched my husband read his Angus Journal and debate one bull over another. At last it's my turn! I found a wonderful stud out of Texas “Earthquake Ike.” He’s everything I would look for to breed Classy and Keo. He’s not cheap, but his offspring would be worth more because of his pedigree (and theirs too).

What to do, what to do. My initial reaction is to wait a year and work on just riding them this year. The down side of waiting is that they are already 18 years old. I would say that’s equivalent to a 40 year old woman…time is a ticking! Sigh…
