Poor Catfish was a bit off last week. One day I looked out and he and Lloyd (the donkey) were hanging out at the loafing shed. Classy, Gunner and Dixie were out on the pond banks pawing through the crusty snow, hoping to find bits of green grass below.
At the next feeding he didn't toss his head at me as I brought the buckets out, although he still ate. Something was just not right with the old man. In the morning I brought out my thermometer, the hoof pick and a mental list of things to check. Temp was good, no diarrhea (sorry to be graphic), good capillary refill response, not dehydrated, no discharge, no wounds on his legs, no warm spots on his legs, good gut sounds and normal respiration. All I could find was a small cut on his right rear coronary band, so I am wondering if he was a bit sore from walking on the crusty snow? During the entire process he would stop eating and just wait for whatever I would do next. Usually when I examine him at feed time he just munches away and ignores me.
Some of you have requested Lloyd news...
Lloyd is fitting in quite nicely around here. He got bit up a bit by Dixie at first and isn't any of the horses' favorite, but us humans and the dog like him lots! In the morning he will watch the girls get on the bus, watch Jack go out for chores and then when I walk out the door he brays. Some how he has figured out that I'm the one who feeds him. He spends his days following the horses around and when it's nap time, he sleeps in Classy's new shed. When the horses push him away from a hay pile he will squeak and protest, but for the most part he puts up with having the indignity of living with four horses.
My open house for the art piece I painted went pretty well. I was between kids' events so I was only there for about half an hour, but it was nice to meet some new people and chat with those I know. There were probably twice as many art pieces this year as last, so that was quite nice. The pieces were all very nice as well. I pick up my work on January 2nd unless it sells.
Saturday we are scheduled for a lesson at Tammy's so, I am hoping for mid 30's weather. Right now they are saying snow. I'm not too keen on driving my hairy beasts over to get sweaty and then home again in a stock trailer. I think it's time to invest in some coolers.

"my hairy beasts over to get sweaty"
I read "hairy breasts".....snort...
We all want Lloyd pictures, not just Llyod stories!!
lol...not too thrilled about driving my hairy breasts over either! Although, to be honest, they aren't hairy atall!
Yes, yes, must get Lloyd pictures and I haven't shared any pictures of our rooster The Dread Pirate Roberts. He has turned into quite the flashy fellow, and I must happily report, quite calm.
I feel your pain trailering in a stock trailer in winter. I made my horses coolers from fleece blankets pretty easy if you can sew at all. For the big guy I joined two and put straps around the throatlatch and on the chest.
Of course you can find them cheap on ebay if you are patient.
Good to hear about your open house, I'd wondered. I am betting your piece will sell before Jan 2nd. I'd love to see some pics of your boy Lloyd. They are such funny animals.
Happy Belated Birthday to your beautiful daughter!
