Today is S's12th birthday. I can hardly believe that she is at the brink of leaving childhood. In so many ways she is still a little girl and delights in childhood, but in the last year and a half she has also begun to face issues with hormones that all girls/woman experience.
When she was in first grade she had dreams of becoming a carpenter. She is still proud to run and get her tool box when ever I need a screwdriver or hammer. Shortly after that she decided she also wanted to run a pet shop where people could drop their pets off (boarding). I asked her about the carpentry business, and she said "Oh, I'm going to do both!"
In the last few years her dreams have turned towards horses. She has always loved horses but now she is thinking she would like to work with them as an adult. "Like Tammy" she will comment. So, from Tammy's own advice we have encouraged her to think about it on another level, with education. UW-Riverfalls has become her current school of choice. "Because you have to have a college degree too!" she'll say. Just two days ago she came home from school and told me one of her horse crazy friends wants to work with horses as an adult. S has informed her that she needs to study hard, or she won't get into a college. Her other 6th grade friends think she's crazy, but I encourage her to keep thinking that way. She listens to talk of N's college aspirations and it rubs off.
After her Equine degree at a college she plans on attending a farrier school. With the two degrees she is certain she will be set for life. I'm certain that I will have a break on my farrier costs, so it's all good.
And, just to keep it real, she found out this fall that her Uncle Don now teaches phy-ed in addition to his special ed classes. This fact blew her mind. "Wow! You can go to school to learn how to teach gym?" she asked. She hadn't noticed that her gym teacher, Jack's cousin, in facts gets paid to teach gym. So, perhaps the break on the farrier costs won't happen, but either way she's thinking about her dreams.
The pictures are of her and her daddy. The one is from June of 2004 (with bangs) and the other is from August of this year.

Hi Kathy
What a beautiful young lady she is, tell her happy b day from me.
The man isn't have bad either... (grin). How is the little donkey getting along??
The pictures are very sweet...your little girl is a beautiful young lady and it sounds like she has a pretty darn good head on her shoulders...you are a blessed mom!
My goodness, she's 12 already?? Happy Birthday to you, sweet girl. She sounds like such a fun person to be around. You are such a good mom, too.
Happy Birthday! And a farrier in the family would be good but my guess is she'll change her mind lots of time between now and whenever she gets to where she's headed.
Happy birthday from me too, a gorgeous young woman. You must be proud. Hmm Farrier school, that is a hard business, takes a lot of strength, I have thought about it myself but I am too old now LOL. If she does go that route I am sure she will give it all she has got.
How did the Artist's Open house go the other night? I still love your painting.
