Here's where I am after...oh...I don't know maybe three, four hours. I had meant this to be kind of a misty feel to it, but then I went to strong on the horses, so now I need to bring the background up to match the horses. Or the fore ground...or basically the ground the horses are standing on. The horse in the back is floating, and while he (Gunner) is typically a freak I should ground him somewhat.
The orange is intentional as is the blue, but I think I will bring it down a bit in a couple places.
Overall I am fairly happy with this piece. You can tell they are horses and with most of my work its meant to be more impressionistic than realistic. Still having a hard time with letting some of the control go, but it will come. Meaning I find myself getting all uptight over the little areas, and then after I let the frustration go I can come back with broader strokes that bring the piece together.
I have been inspired lately to paint as my arthritis is becoming pretty achy in my right hand. Why would that inspire me you ask? Because I know my hands will be gnarled useless masses within the next decade or so, and when that happens you can bet that I won't be one of those paint with my feet types. Besides, my feet aren't in all that good of shape either!
Today when I had my annual exam I mentioned my hands were getting achy and when she (the Doc) looked at them she was quite shocked. Not a good sign. She sent me off to the x-ray tech and set up an appointment to see someone. I don't know, I suppose it was an arthritis specialist. It's late and I've had too much caffeine. Needless to say between my hands and feet you would have thought she would forget about the 20 lbs I need to lose. Sadly such is not the case. It came up over and over. Oh well, I've had a fun year and a half indulging in high fat foods and being a couch potato so its time for that to end.
For those of you who keep track this is an oil piece on an 8x10 panel. I love oils. Have I mentioned that? Probably not. They are messy and expensive but a joy to work with after years of messing with watercolors. And And And I can finish the ground tomorrow after some sleep and some more thought on the whole thing.
Off to try and attempt some sleep. (Like that's going to happen after drinking Mountain Dew at 9:00 at night. That's right, you read that right...I had a Mountain Dew (Last one I swear))

Sorry to hear about the arthritis, Kath. I have one finger that is really starting to bother me. I don't know what it is, if it is arthritis or what, but bah! what a pain. Better not affect the truffling. That's all I have to say.
Gotta get to bed. Much to do tomorrow.
BTW, this weekend Keith and I are heading to Mineral Point again to bring truffles to the Bohlin Gallery for Gallery Night on Saturday night. FYI. Smooches...

I think the oil is beautiful, can you do one of Harley for me??? Sorry to hear about the aches, I have some starting in my hands as well. Getting older sucks! Keep doing what you love, I tell myself that everytime I climb on Harley.
I really like oils and you did a wonderful job there. You are so talented and I am so sorry to here that you are having arthritis problems. My mother is a sufferer and I know it can be very painful...
Sorry to hear about your arthritis, not a fun thing at all. It doesn't look like it slows you down. That's a good thing.
As for Mountain Dew at 9 at night, you'll be lucky if you can sleep by morning. lol
Kathy this is fabulous. I wish I could paint but I cant so I have to stick to my photography I am afraid.
Hope your arthritis feels better and I know what you mean about a long cold winter, our horses all started thickening up very very early this year and seem to be hairier too.
