The Freezer

Today I cleaned out the deep freezer. Not the one that actually freezes items, but the broke one I got from a friend who owns a recycling center.

Back in September I asked if they ever get any old freezers in that are in somewhat good condition. Not too large and not too small, just a mid-size freezer would do. She replied that most of the freezers that came in stunk horribly. When I thought about it I could understand how they could accumulate a rather snarky oder. Especially considering their dying duty was to let all of their contents slowly thaw. None the less, two days later she let me know they had one on hold for me.

So what, pray tell, would I want with a freezer? Especially a broke freezer? It is my new feed bin! It is air tight, sparkly clean and now all the feed, vitamins and supplements are neatly contained in one mid-size non snarky freezer unit.

On another note I am happy to report that the elevator that I have knocked my knees against for the last two years has been drug out of the hay shed and will be taken to the scrap yard sometime this week. As most farmers do, Jack's dad likes to save old implements for their parts. This last week the elevator that uploads the corn into the corn bin was replaced by another old elevator. The new old one is a different size and is hydrolic (no exposed chains). All of the old elevators will be sent on their way to the scrap yard. One from the hay shed, the one that broke and one that has been stored in the woods across the road.

This week work begins on Classy's foaling shed. My guess is by mid week it will be finished. I can't believe how expensive building materials cost. The carpenter we use is an exceptional craftsman, so I know her shed will be of superior quality when it is finished. I think the final size will be 14x20.

Classy is getting so large already. She also has become more and more anti social as her pregnancy continues. They say horses are very social, but this whole pregnancy thing has really changed her personality. I look out to see her and Gunner grazing in completely different areas of the pasture. Even while napping Catfish, Dixie and Gunner will group up along the fence, while Classy is about 100 feet away napping by herself.

An older freezer for grain storage! Now that's a good idea (if you can get the smell out of it....)

Maybe Classy will feel more sociable later. I have no idea about these things, but I wasn't too sociable when I was pregnant either.

Lots going on in your world!

My grandmother has 2 large freezers she stores her beef and veggies in from her garden. My parents have one in the basement they will go back and dig a roast or something out of....I have none. I guess the thing of killing your own beef and freezing your own corn, etc. will die out on my end of the tree.

Pregnant mares can be very grumpy. And they are not always the same from one pregnancy to another.

I find it odd how similar our lives are, I too use an old freezer for storage in my barn. Of course I use an old bathtub for a trough outside, guess I am a recycling queen. I was quite cranky during my last pregnancy so I know how that girl feels.
