Here's the same photo as below after N photoshopped the barrel out.
Here's the one she likes the best. I can see that it is not as crisp at a larger size, but I am having it printed off so she can decide.
And the following are the other contenders for action.
Here is her entry for non-action. I think the actual 8x10's will help her decision. Thanks for any and all input!

I love the artsy one at the end!! I think the others are great too, but artsy always gets me.
Hi Kathy
Thanks for your visit to my blog. I found this article amongst others but found it the closest to what my horses are experiencing.

On N's photos, great shots, the softness bothers me a bit on the eye shot and the action shot but they often print very differently from what you see on the screen. Has she used any sharpening on either of them? The one where she took the barrel out is great, just be careful of the repetitive cloning on the bottom right, it is not bad but the judges may notice it. I like the fact that it has the legs blurred which shows the speed. The eye shot is stunning but needs to have the focus on the eyeball itself but again it will probably look great in print, the screen doesnt always give you an accurate indication on what it will look like in print. I have often had a shot that I thought was a bit soft/fuzzy and when I have printed it, it looks fine. I would love to see both of them printed, well done a great job. Hope this helps and I look forward to hearing how she does with them.
My critique has to do withcomposistion and choice of subject.
I vote for the second barrel racing photo, the one with the horse immediately in front of the blue barrel. The one withthe yellow jacket catches the horse at an unflattering angle and it is out of focus. My candidate phoot is full of action. The horse"s muscles are well defined, its tail is up, ears back with effort. The only negative for me is the curious blankets, but on the other hand, those add interest. What makes it better than the last two racing photos is that it tells a story. The other two have no surrounding elements to tie the photo into time or place.
About the non-action, I have a thing against horse-eye photos. The biggest thing for me is that it does not tell a story...maybe if it had more of the eye in it and the horse's personality could come through. The other thing for me is that horse-eye photos are quite common. I saw it and I thought "Oh, another horse-eye photo, ho hum"--it has to be a GREAT horse-eye photo before it will really stand out as a creative moment.
Thanks everyone!
I don't know how they judge these things so my opinion doesn't count. However, any time someone asks for my opinion I get real excited. I like the one with the blue barrel because you can really tell the "G" forces at work, and horse and rider look balanced. I love the still shot. Just gorgeous. While I like the lower shot of the girl on the chestnut because we can see her face and the action is captured, she doesn't have on a helmet and that makes me worry.
Let us know what she chooses and what wins!
I like the original photo with the barrel in it. It is like a rack focus and the barrel tells us she is barrel racing. I don't mind that is it fuzzy, because your eye draws to the focused part of the photo. I think it is the most compelling shot because her head is down and that horse looks determined! Really nice non action shot---very pretty. Good luck!
I love the one of the horse's eye and the one with the barrel. I love taking pics of horses and them in action. thanks for sharing!
