In Search of Triplets

The Man called me from the other farm yesterday to say that the latest birthing produced triplets. Triplets! This morning, with camera in hand we went off to find them. We've had twins before, but never triplets. After much searching we found two of the three. Now he's wondering if he was wrong. Tonight I will head back over to see what I can find. The mom was pretty nervous so I wasn't able to get any shots off of her and her twins, but I did get a few of the other calves relaxing in the shade.

Saturday was S's first every swim meet. She had a nice time and has enjoyed her eight weeks of swim team. She will more than likely try it again next spring.

Yesterday I had what I would consider a victory with Gunner. I brought him home for the farrier's visit on Friday morning. He will be here until Tuesday, so yesterday I worked him in our version of an arena. In the past I have walked him down the road, but wasn't able to get far before he would freak. Yesterday I saddled him, walked him a mile to the arena, worked him on a lounge line, worked bending and flexing and rode him a bit. Just me and him on our own. No help from the kids, no horse along to calm him. He has overcome his fear of cars. He did find a new fear though, lambs and sprinklers! Our Chicago neighbor has lambs and a large orchard and ponds with fountains and sprinklers going all the time. VERY SCAREY! Actually even the old horses are nervous of the lambs and sprinklers. At one point when I was lounging him he stopped and I got the line tangled around his legs, I mean REALLY tangled. He was starting to get freaked, so I just let go and let him run. He took off across the field with the line behind him, eventually stopping at the fence. When I went to retrieve him he acted as if nothing happened.

Our last adventure was to pick some lilacs that had grown on top of a pile of dirt in the adjoining field. I had no where to tie him, so he stood at the end of the 7' line while I scampered to the top of the hill to pick the flowers. He thought more than once about joining me on top! A low toned whoa kept him where he was. Half way home I decided me carrying the lounge line and whip was ridiculous, so I tied it to his saddle and used him as a pack horse. Here's a shot of the horses as I called them up for supper last night.
They are from left to right: Catfish (the fish), Dixie, Gunner and Classy.

If there is a third calf, I hope it is ok. My horse is afraid of sprinklers and ducks! We are working on both and she is doing much better with the ducks, not so much with the sprinklers. Great shot of the herd.

I don't think I have known anyone around here to have triplets! That is astonishing. I am going to ask daddy today if he has ever known anyone. I think you guys are pretty special!
