This one should get ya going...

Since shortly after we bought Classy I have thought about breeding her. I mean come on look at the mare...she's a beauty!

After N's successful year of showing her, it was decided that she needed to retire from barrels and do trails and possibly produce some more babies. Here's a few of her babes...

So, after picking out a beautiful stallion and trying to inform myself as much as possible I have decided against breeding her. For many reasons...

1) Horses are pretty darn cheap these days and with the whole slaughter issue there seems to be an abundance of them.
2) I think the time it would take to correctly bring up a colt is beyond what I am capable of.
3) She has some hoof issues. While not quite a club hoof, one of her hooves is different than the other and passing on the possibilty doesn't makes sense to me, when (see #1)
4) Complications. I scared myself pretty good about all the complications that can come about from breeding. It's no different than when I was pregnant. I just need to stay away from the vet and mare/breeding books.

You know with all those reasons staring me in the face, I still want to breed her, but more than likely won't. Not when I can get my hands on a little beauty like this for about the same price.

And by the way she is a beautiful mare. I have two mares myself and my farrier is partial to Misty, my 1/4 horse/morgan cross and was talking about breeding with his Paint stud. For those very reasons I said no and even though I would love to raise my own foal, no way.

Yep Callie, I will be heading down on Friday to check out the 4-H tack swap. Unless I find my youngest a saddle before that...are you heading over?

Hi Kathy. Thanks for your visits to my blog I appreciate it.

You are right to think twice about breeding, unless you are intending to keep the baby for yourself. As an investment to sell, it just doesnt pay and has been like that for a while. My husband and I have this same argument every year. I dont want to breed the mares until we have sold all of ours and he does. It is very taxing to go through it every year. I LOVE the babies but just dont have the time for them. I still have five yearlings from 2006, two three year olds from 2004 and one from 2001 that we havent been able to sell, so what is the point??? I wont send my horses to the sale barn because I cant bear to think they will land in the wrong hands. As a result I have 19 horses at the moment with one foal due here and 3 in Iowa. The Iowa foals and dams will be coming back in August/September which will give me a total of 22 horses!!!! Only 5.5 acres and 9 stalls.

Your mare is beautiful and you will have many more years to get her bred and have a baby from her. I have been very fortunate to not have many bad experiences in the 6 years and 20 odd foals I have seen born here but it is not always like that.

Good luck and enjoy the horses that you do have now. I dont find that I have time to enjoy mine and that is so sad because I lived the first 40 years of my life wishing I owned a horse. Now I have all of these and no time for anything else. I never get to ride because by the time the chores are done I have no inclination or am just too darned tired.

Thanks again

Lori

Oh those pictures are so good. They are all so beautiful.

My friend was over today telling me about what she is doing to get ready to breed her mare...good grief it was so much...I asked her if I decided to breed Ruby couldn't I just do it the old fashioin way and put a stud in there with while she was in heat. How do the ones in the wild get pregnant? I had no idea it was so complicated. I think I'd have to be old fashioned and if it didn't work it didn't work.
Of course we would just be going for our own baby with a regular nice quarterhorse stud. I imagine if you wanted an expensive stud you couldn't waste all that time cause time is money. If you decide to do it, it will be fun taking the journey with you.
