The Cattle Show

Last Friday was The Cattle Show at our little county fair and my girls were quite busy. N had decided to bring the cow and triplets, a cow calf pair, a heifer and a steer. S brought her steer Buddy.

I think the highest award they received was reserve champion Angus female for N's cow Velma. It's pretty hard for a cow to win a champion class against heifers, so it was an accomplishment in itself. Velma has been to the fair many, many times. First as a yearling heifer, then yearly we seem to take her back with one of her calves. Two years ago year it was her first heifer calf KP, last year we took her second heifer calf Maria and this year it was first bull calf Mo. The Man wanted to sell her a few years back and took her to a sale in December. I told him he had better bring her back, and sure enough he did. She didn't bring the price he was hoping for. She has improved our herd and is guaranteed to continue to do it through KP, Maria and Mo.

The triplets N brought were a favorite at the fair. A lot of people stopped by to see them. The judge gave kind remarks about the cow and said this was a first in his judging career.

S showed her steer Buddy at the fair. The picture at top is her blowing him dry after washing him. Buddy was aptly named for his kind nature. The gentle giant grew to 1420 lbs at weigh in! After the show is over, the kids entered the animal auction and each got a nice price for their steers. The money goes into their college account.
