This morning as Shyla and I were watching for the bus I noticed that part of my wood sculpture of a wolf and three babies was on the floor. It was an odd place for it to be, as it is usually on a shelf 5' in the air.
Earlier in the week Shyla had asked me about how it was made, who made it and who gave it to me. Logically, she was the person to ask about the piece being on the ground. She couldn't tell me why it was on the floor, but she was willing to help me find the missing pieces. She went directly to the rubber tree in the corner of the sun room, reached behind the tree, into the dirt and pulled out the mother.
I asked her if she had put it there. With very wide and very innocent eyes she said "No."
Right... she knows exactly where it was but she didn't put it there, uh huh, sure...From here I continued to interigate her. You can see the issue at hand had changed. She continued to argue, quite convincingly, that she didn't know how it had got there. Convincingly because, again, I got the wide eyed innocent look. She finally broke down and admitted that she had indeed been playing with it, and technically yes she had put the piece beind the tree.
Whew!! I swear she is going to get away with SO many things when she gets older. As we were discussing it, in the back of my mind I was amazed that she could look at me like that and part of me believed her! She really really looked like she didn't know how it got there.
Be forwarned! If you have seen the other two pieces and you know exactly where they are, chances are that I won't believe you when you say "I don't know how they got there."

Look at it this way, the art was so compelling she was carried away by it and felt it belonged in a more natural setting, felt compelled to interact with it...and by the way, that is great scupture! What, precisely, are its demensions, and how did you make it? I mear, how did you free the creatures from the surrounding element? Fascinating stuff, Kathy, really. I'm so glad you've started this new blog. I am excited to see what your work-- and I'm wondering if maybe this move to a new home hasn't unearthed a few older treasures that you could photograph and share with us? A retrospective show, perhaps? I, for one, would love to see all of it.
