Most importantly I must share with you that Emmett is now shoeless! At our appointment this week it was decided to take the shoes off to see how he stood without them. Low and behold his heals touched the ground. Or they do at a walk and trot and when he bothers to stand straight.
I just can't believe that with these shoes he has made that much progress. Now, I will say he is still a bit steeper than some foals you would see, but he is definitely putting his heal on the ground.
Now we wait 10 days and have a recheck. I am giving him Equioxx for five days and then he will go off the pain medication and we will see if he stays down.
Emmett is now officially weaned. He is a bit depressed, and I guess you can't blame the colt. Mom's out in the big pasture with the cows trying to gain back some of the weight he literally sucked right out of her. He on the other hand is still restricted in his exercise. He has a little more room to play, but is not free to roam as he would like.
In other horse news the girls went to two local fun shows this weekend. They had a nice time and both shows were a lot of fun. (thus the name)
Someone approached us today and asked about Dixie's breeding. She asked if she was out of Wimpy Joe. She has an old foundation Quarter Horse that looks identical to Dixie. We, sadly do not have papers on the mare, but she is as foundation looking as you can get. I occasionally see pictures of some of the foundation hall of famers in the Q magazine we get, and so many of those foundation horses look like our Dixie. The lady said what a nice ride he was but he was a bit of a stinker, and I said he must be Dixie's brother. She was looking for another horse just like him, and then later she came back over and crooned over Dixie. It was quite humorous because we ALWAYS get comments about Gunner and his looks, and never Dixie. She's just this plain old brown horse. We know she is SO much more though.
For instance the day after she bucked S off, the cows got out. So as we were putting the horses away, I said, "get on Dixie and bring them in." Done. Just like that. Gunner would have been scared to death and confused. Not our little Dixie though... I would say she is worth her weight in gold, but gold prices are up, and horse prices are down. So probably not quite the equality in value there, but she is priceless to S and to the whole family really. The two are like peas in a pod.
N and Gunner
N and her horse are establishing a nice bond. He was such a putz this weekend. Bucky as all get out on Saturday. N, didn't get scared, she just rode it out. He has also become quite vocal at the shows. At times it is annoying and at other times humorous. Mostly because he has a quiet, chuckle sort of neigh. On Saturday he did a quiet neigh just as a young girl got her Ball in the Pail in one of the classes, as if to say "bravo!"
It is the bucks and ribbons, the chuckles and tears that make my heart sing when I watch my girls ride. Whether it's S and Dixie rounding up cattle or N and Gunner doing natural lead changes in her first pole class at a lope, owning these horses is worth all the blood sweat and tears we put into them, and the money. The money too.

Glad to hear that Emmett is out of his shoes. I'm sure that weaning is traumatic, it always is, but he'll do fine.
It sounds like you had a fun weekend with the girls. That's pretty cool.
I am so glad to hear about Emmet's progress :)))
It is so worth the money. I am broke and I have no furniture in my house, but when I see Izzy do a half pass on Dante, I know it is worth it. They have been doing some jumping. He did two three feet fences with two strides in between. Pretty good for a boy who did not know how to jump last year. :)
Good news about Emmet! Sounds like a great weekend of horsy fun that was had with your girls! Cool!
