As much as I wanted to be there for the actual foaling, sitting and watching the sunrise as our new foal found his legs was about the most moving experience of my life. My favorite time of year on the farm is when the cows calve out, so having the opportunity to be there shortly after Emmett was born ranks pretty high on my all time best days of my life. At one point as the sun was getting higher in the sky I looked over, camera in hand to see this image against the shed wall. I quickly got a few shots in before they moved again.
As this was the first foal I've had experience with, there was a lot of nervousness on my behalf. Thank goodness Classy is an old pro at the whole thing. She is very protective of her colt, but is the lady she has always been with us. We are allowed in her pen and we are allowed to touch and work with Emmett. The donkey? Not so much. Poor Lloyd had to be moved over to the next pen.
I had meant to wait one more day to let them out of their shed, but they snuck out on me. It has been really beautiful here the last few days and Classy was thrilled to be released. She bucked and rolled and enjoyed what little freedom she could while Emmett tried out his legs on uneven ground. It wasn't long before she was chasing him down.
I love to watch her take care of him. She watches and if he gets too close to the fence she will trot between him and the fence and redirect him. She also stands over him as he sleeps all spread out after an hour of running.
Emmett is a friendly little guy. He likes to come up and sniff my face and will let me hold his face, my hands on either side of his jaws. I noticed yesterday he will have one small speck of blue in his right eye. A tribute to his Bright Eyes bloodlines that comes through his mum.

Baby horses are so much fun. I could sit and watch them all day. Sounds like you're enjoying it too.

Nothing better than watching a new life take on the world. I miss my baby horse days , sometimes....
Glad they are both well and that you are enjoying them.
Aw, your baby Emmett is so cute! What special moments to watch! I'm an Appy owner and I think his sire is just gorgeous, I'm going to have to look him up! Keep taking lots of pics!
I bet that was a glorious day! What a great experience you were given, I know I'd of been a nervous wreck. I wish little Emmett the best. I was hoping there would be a little foal when I came over this morning. You are truly blessed!
