Last week the girls had two days off for teacher's convention. On Thursday we watched one of the old sheds be torn down right before our very eyes. It was cold and windy so we stayed inside and peered out the living room window. In the afternoon S and I went shopping for her Halloween outfit.
She had decided to be a pirate again, but I suggested on Wednesday that maybe she wanted to be Medusa? She was very excited about that idea, so off we went in pursuit of supplies.
We tracked down a bag full of mini snakes and a scarf that looked like a snake at the Dollar Tree. Wal-Mart supplied us with a black dress, a green patterned shirt, makeup, a headband, black boots and 8 large plastic snakes.
Friday morning the work began. N helped with the fake eyes ala Johnny Dep and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Meanwhile I hot glued the snakes to the headband, and then wired them in place. Next I did the same to her shiny black boots wrapping a snake around the boot with its head resting on top of her toes. An old pair of N's earrings were taken apart to make snake earrings and snakes were wired head to toe to make the bracelets and necklace.
Her "pet" snake was made from the scarf we found at Dollar Tree. I took one end and sewed it shut in the shape of a snakehead. I then inserted a red pipe cleaner twisted in half through the end of the head, stuffed it and sewed it shut. Its tail was done in much the same way with pipe cleaners doubled and quadrupled to make a twisted tail. As a final touch googly eyes were hot glued onto the head.
Our next adventure had to do with S's hair. She has about 16" of beautiful dark blond hair (if you haven't seen pictures). I bound it up in a high pony, and hair spayed individual snake strands before curling it and creating ringlets. The ringlets were fasted to her other hair. After all her hair was curled I inserted gold curler type fingers into the band that stuck out at twisted curled odd angles.
N finished her makeup with black lipstick and black fingernail polish. The overall project start to finish took about 3 intense hours. There was much arguing, but that is what happens among sisters. (leave your eyes shut – they itch- yadda yadda yadda)

Awesome Medusa costume!
Amazing what lengths we moms will go to for things like this, eh? One year my son was Cerberus, the three-headed dog for a mythology pageant at school. That one kind of stressed me out, frankly. But I generally have lots of fun with my kids costumes too. I may "borrow" your design for the next mythology thingie at school!
Kimberly
That is fabulous but didn't it hurt her eyes! Very cool.
They eyes? They are terrible... Awful. They put me in pain. I love them! She looks crazy beautiful. Fabulous.
What is that on/in her eyes?
Liz it's just Halloween costume makeup. Applied very thickly and with much complaint, because yes Deanna it did hurt.
I figured the pain had a little more to do with her sister applying it with a rough hand than anything else. Sisterly love and all.
